Lay Zhang’s dragon energy emanates throughout the 2nd part of his 4th studio album '莲 (Lit)'. Released on July 21st on all major platforms, '莲 (Lit)' Part 2 has 6 songs with a combination of lyrics in both Mandarin and English, for a total of 12 songs in the '莲 (Lit)' series. Staying true to the foundation laid with the 1st part of the series, the 6 songs on Part 2 integrate traditional Chinese instruments, cultural metaphors, and an urban sound to make a refreshing, upbeat blend of Mandarin-Western music that reflects Lay Zhang’s past, present, and future.
For those of you new to Lay’s music, he is a multi-talented artist, writer, dancer, and member of the K-pop group “EXO”. As the 1st Chinese artist to enter the US Billboard Chart Top 200 and iTunes Chart at #60 with his 3rd studio album, 'Namanana', there has been a lot of excitement about the '莲 (Lit)' album release. Lay takes a very hands-on approach to all of his solo music: writing and producing songs in addition to developing the choreography for the music videos and stage performances. His 4th studio album is no different, as he has been involved in every step of the process. Working with Grammy award-winning producer Murda Beatz and others while utilizing his experiences with Jason Derulo and Steve Aoki, Lay has been able to capture the unique essence of the instruments from his heritage while integrating a fresh, urban beat to represent his goals for the future.
Lay successfully created a bridge between the Chinese and Western cultures, his past and his present, through the perfection and purity of his music. The album name and title track illustrate this concept perfectly as the album title is '莲' - Chinese for the word “Lotus” and translates in English to the word “Lit.” Three songs were released as part of this album- Part 1: Jade (Track 2), Lit (Track 1), and Part 2: Boom (Track 9). The songs in the first part of the album had more traditional Chinese instruments, the second part has more of an urban sound, but the Chinese instruments are still heard. This album is perfect for anyone looking for confidence building, stress-relieving, and upbeat urban and world music.
